Master And Servant
Depeche Mode
Mute Records/UK (1984)
Sticks and stones may break their bones, but whips and chains excite them. For their 11th single, the band wanted to sample a real whip cracking. They settled for altering a recording of producer Daniel Miller “spitting and hissing” to produce the whip sound. Sound effects too kinky and too much frank talk about sexual politics for many US radio stations. The story goes that it might have been banned by BBC Radio too, but the one person in favor of the ban was away on holiday when the rest of the staff voted on whether to put “Master and Servant” in rotation.

We love the music of the 80's. The good, the bad, and the downright ugly. It's all here.
Any band or artist that recorded during the 1980's is welcomed here. But we reserve the right to include pioneers from the 70's and the hearty few that made it into the early 90's as well. So please, no quibbling about release dates.
So stay awhile and flip through our collection.
