Pop stars of multiple genres and eras unite for a worthy cause. It’s been happening almost as long as there have been pop stars, but it seems so quintessentially eighties. When you only have 10 words or so to make an impression, you’d better really wail… and possibly veer into unintentional self-parody. Quincy Jones famously advised the group to “check their egos at the door.” Michael Jackson avoided having to check his ego (or being exposed to less-exalted-celeb germs) by not appearing with everyone else except via video effect
